Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Running Tour of Basel?

A Running Tour of Basel is a fun new way to discover and learn about the city, past and present, whilst running.  Each tour is accompanied by a knowledgeable guide passionate about Basel.   Basel is particularly well suited to the Running Tours concept as it is compact, bursting with history and has many miles of beautiful waterside paths. Try it and see.

Who is it for?

The service was initially aimed at tourists, relocating families and short stay business travellers, although there has also been interest from residents who are interested to find out more about the city they live in.

I’m a local.  Will I get anything from your tour?

We’ve had many locals on our tours and each of them have gone away happy.  We often get comments like ‘I walk past that every day on the way to work but I never even noticed it’ or I’ve lived here for years but didn’t know half of what I learnt today’.  How much you get from the tour will depend partially on your local knowledge but more so on whether you enjoy exploring the city on foot with a group of interested, knowledge people.   We run daily and still love it….

Do you run non-stop for the full tour?

No. The tours are designed to stop at a number of key points of interest along the way.  Depending on the tour you can expect to stop every 3-8 minutes.

Am I fit enough?

Running tours are designed to be a fun way of seeing the city – rather than a race around town.  Thus, while it is down to you to decide whether a Basel Running Tour is for you, our best suggestion is ‘if you like jogging – at any level, then you will be fine.

The tours have many stops and rest points and you will not be jogging more than 8 minutes without a stop.  If you are unsure of your running ability choose one of the shorter/lower pace group runs or book a private tour as these are tailored to running ability of the customer.

So which tour is right for me?

Basel Running Tours run two types of tour – Private tours and Group tours

Private tour: You name the time and date and our tour guide will pick you up from your preferred start point - whether that be your hotel, work place or somewhere else.  With a private tour you can choose from one of our pre-designed routes or simply suggest key points of interest you would like to include and we will design a route accordingly.  The speed and distance covered in a private tours is dictated entirely by you.

Group tour: With a group tour we set the time, date, start point and route and you pre-book a spot on the run.  With a maximum of 8 people these small groups are a good way to see the sights in a social, fun environment.  For group tours we indicate speed and distance in advance.

How many people do you take on the Group tours?

A maximum of 8 people per tour guide.

What should I bring with me?

All you need with you is comfortable running clothes and trainers.  You could bring a small bottle of water however it is not necessary as you are never be far from a water fountain in Basel. Some people also like to bring a small snack/energy bar for after run

Is there somewhere to leave my things while on a run?

This depends on the start point and should therefore be stated in the tour description.  If in doubt however just drop us a line.

Do you run throughout the year?

Yes. Exhibition times and public holidays are particularly busy for us so please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Do I need to book in advance?

For a private tour we prefer 48 hours notice although we can sometimes arrange tours at short notice. For Group tours, bookings can be made up to 1 hour before as long as availability still exists on the tour (each tour has a maximum of 8 runners per guide).

How do I pay?

Basel Running Tours accept bank transfer prior to a tour or cash payment on the day.
